Opinion: Let’s Regulate Hemp Responsibly, Not Ban It

At SunstoneCBD, we believe in balance. We make products that help people relax, focus, and unwind without the hangover, without the fog, and without the harm that often comes with alcohol or synthetic quick fixes.

That’s why we’re deeply concerned about a new federal proposal that would limit THC in hemp-derived products to 0.4 milligrams per serving. On the surface, it might sound like a reasonable safety measure. In reality, it would eliminate nearly every hemp product currently on the market.

This isn’t careful regulation. It’s prohibition disguised as protection.

Hemp has been one of the most promising rural success stories since the fall of tobacco. It’s helped small farmers rebuild their livelihoods, supported family-run businesses like ours, and offered adults across North Carolina and beyond a natural way to rest and recharge. The proposed cap would wipe out that progress overnight.

We fully support protecting minors and holding brands accountable for safe, transparent labeling. But the answer isn’t to ban chemistry. It is to regulate access responsibly, the same way we already do with alcohol.

• Set a legal purchase age of 21.

• Require accurate lab testing and child-safe packaging.

• Enforce responsible marketing and labeling standards.

Those steps protect youth and empower adults. They make enforcement simple and effective. Retailers already check IDs for beer and wine. They can do the same for hemp products.

Blanket bans don’t protect anyone. They just push sales underground, where products are untested, unregulated, and often unsafe. Responsible companies like ours, who use certified labs, organic ingredients, and transparent sourcing, shouldn’t be punished for the mistakes of a few bad actors.

We don’t fear oversight. We welcome clear, consistent rules that ensure trust and safety across the industry. What we fear is seeing thoughtful legislation replaced by reactionary limits that would devastate farmers, drive small businesses out of the market, and hurt consumers looking for safer, plant-based wellness options.

Hemp isn’t the problem. Irresponsible policy is.

SunstoneCBD will continue to stand for fairness, transparency, and adult choice. We believe the path forward isn’t prohibition. It is responsibility. Let’s keep this industry alive, ethical, and sustainable for the communities and families it supports.

Reach out to your representatives and senators and let them know there are better ways than prohibition. Ask them to support age limits, accurate labeling, and strong testing instead of blanket caps that punish responsible adults and small businesses.
